Dave Orban & the Mojo Gypsies

Jazz-inflected blues and old-school R&B

Led by a New Jersey Blues Hall of Fame inductee, Dave Orban & the Mojo Gypsies fuse jazz sensibility, deep-blues roots, and original songwriting into a sound that’s anything but predictable.

Based in the central NJ/greater Philly area, since 1998, they’ve been entertaining crowds from Baltimore to NYC, and as far west as Pittsburgh. And make no mistake: They’re not your father’s blues band™!

Dave Orban & the Mojo Gypsies deliver a fresh, swinging take on the blues, blending jazz-inflected grooves, classic R&B, and a touch of New Orleans funk. Formed in 1998 and based in central New Jersey and the greater Philadelphia area, the band has performed throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. Led by New Jersey Blues Hall of Fame inductee Dave Orban, the Mojo Gypsies feature an unconventional lineup of guitar/vocals, tenor sax, bass, and drums. Their performances combine Orban’s witty, story-driven originals with deep cuts from classic and contemporary blues artists, offering audiences a soulful, energetic, and distinctly non-cookie-cutter blues experience.

Album Review

“Dave Orban and the Mojo Gypsies did a fine job with I Heard You Twice the First Time, and it’s well worth a listen. But you’ll want to listen to it more than once, as the songs are well-written and provide a personal feel that’s hard to find in the cover songs that fill many new blues albums.”  >> Read more.

Background

Formed in 1998, Dave Orban & the Mojo Gypsies bring a fresh, swinging approach to the blues, blending jazz-inflected grooves, classic R&B, and a touch of New Orleans funk. Based in central New Jersey and the greater Philadelphia area, the band has performed throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, from Baltimore to New York City and beyond.

Led by Dave Orban, an inductee into the New Jersey Blues Hall of Fame, the Mojo Gypsies stand apart from typical blues acts through their eclectic repertoire and unconventional lineup of guitar/vocals, tenor sax, bass, and drums. Their sound draws from Chicago and West Coast electric blues, Southern country blues, and New Orleans–style marches, all delivered with a modern, jazz-forward sensibility.

Orban has performed with or supported nationally recognized artists including James Harman, Debbie Davies, Rick Estrin & the Nightcats, John Hammond Jr., Lucky Peterson, and Selwyn Birchwood. The band’s performances feature Orban’s witty, story-driven original songs alongside deep-cut selections from classic and contemporary blues artists—music that rewards attentive listeners while keeping audiences dancing.

With an award-winning debut album of original material (I Heard You Twice the First Time, 2016) and a reputation for dynamic live shows, Dave Orban & the Mojo Gypsies deliver blues that’s soulful, swinging, and anything but predictable.

Life. The ups, the downs, the successes, the failures, love, loss… you name it. It’s all about the human condition. If you’ve experienced sadness, heartache or joy, you can write a song about it.”
